Using PowerPoint in your Videoconference
Microsoft PowerPoint is a very popular and effective means of delivering a presentation. If you plan on using PowerPoint in your videoconference, make sure that the facility is capable of showing PowerPoint. If there is any problems, the room technician will be able to assist you. Here are a few tips to help you create a great PowerPoint presentation.
- Remember to design for delivery using a landscape orientation rather than portrait. The image will fit better on a computer display and a TV-type monitor.
- Use bright letters against solid light backgrounds, or light letters against solid dark backgrounds bright yellow or white against a dark blue background works well. Avoid the use of red it tends to smudge into other colours.
- Use the same lettering and background throughout your presentation. Keep the background shading consistent across the screen so text is readable in all areas.
- Don't use more than seven or eight lines per slide and keep your information concise. Remember a few choice words can convey a whole paragraph.
- Font size and style. Use a sans-serif font (i.e. Arial, Helvetica) as they are easier to read than serif fonts (Times Roman). Use bold when ever possible.
- Use illustrations, charts and clip art when appropriate.
- Keep your visual information to a minimum. A busy slide forces smaller font sizes to be used.
- Avoid using sounds for introducing a new slide or bullet point. They could become repetitious, and the sound level at a far site could be much louder than a presenter's voice. Use animations and slide effects prudently, as they may appear jerky for viewers with low-end video connections.
