The Importance of Lighting

The Importance of Lighting

Creating the feeling of a face-to-face conversation is an important aspect of video conferencing. Great lighting makes that feeling more appearant.

Three common lighting problems and their solutions:

PROBLEM: Too Much Backlight

  • Backlight is any source of light behind the subject, such as windows, lamps or sconces.
  • Too much backlight will make the subject appear dark.

SOLUTION:

  • Remove backlight
  • Change room orientation
  • Light front of subject.

PROBLEM: Shot Appears Dark (Insufficient Light)

  • There needs to be sufficient light in front of the subject in order to properly see the subject. Even if there is only light from a ceiling, the subject should be poised behind the source of light.

SOLUTION:

  • Ensure that the subject is well lit from the front.

  • Change room orientation.

  • Remove backlight.

PROBLEM: Poor Light Colour

  • The color of light can affect the quality of the image.

SOLUTION:

  • Make sure that the light is not tinted or shaded by anything in the shooting location. Blinds, lampshades, and even pictures depending on their location can all contribute to an unwanted tint in your shot.
